A Closer Look with Alejandro Giraldo

Meet Alejandro Giraldo, an illustrator and art director from Medellín Columbia who has worked on some incredible freelance projects and has great insight into inspiration, motivation and personal projects. Take a closer look!

How long have you been working in your creative field?
I think humans are creative since the day they were born, but some of us just decided to get a diploma and make that for a living. So, I’ve been in my creative field for 28 years and  I’ve been a freelance illustrator for 3 years now.

#madethis With Girl Skateboards and Adobe, Powered by Behance

During the fall of 2014, Adobe and Girl Skateboards teamed up to create an “internship” that give five amazing students the opportunity to design stunning limited edition skateboards. Students “applied” through Behance, tagging their designs with #madethis and #girl and with hundreds of entries, Scott Biersack of Arizona State University, Caleb Morris of Savannah College of Art and Design, Mitch Viney from the University of Technology in Sydney, Emma Campbell of Auckland University of Technology, and Cody Bass from the University of Southern Mississippi were selected.

We’re stoked to see the work this group was able to crank out.  Check out these video updates to learn more about their experiences:

Most Appreciated Projects: Monthly Roundup

Appreciations are a way to send genuine kudos to another creative professional on Behance. This is our community’s way of curating the network, so that the best projects gain the most exposure. Here’s a look at two of the most appreciated projects on Behance this month:

Most Appreciated Behance
Imagine a world where boring headshot portraits were replaced by something this epicThe Ars Thanea team created these portraits of their staff for the new website using “soaking colors, deep saturation, and a lot of magical dust.” They said: “we didn’t plan how to use these portraits, we just wanted to do it. So we did. A beautiful day, great energy, absolutely worth it. Just for fun.” Here’s to creating for the fun of it in 2015!

Alphabet of the Countries
presents 25 hand letter logotypes, each representing a country (starting with A for Australia, B for Belgium, etc). We love this mashup of a branding and typography concept! If you can’t find your country’s “logo,” Pavel Zertsikel (of Russia), promises future editions ahead.

Testimonial: William J. Meyer

William J. Meyer, a Behance member since 2009, was able to transform a classic form of old media, the book, into an award-winning new media passion project.

A few years back I wrote a fantasy-adventure novel called FIRE ON THE MOUND. Looking for different ways to share the book, a friend recommended that I turn it into a weekly podcast.  Using vocal talent, sound effects, and an original score, my small team produced a total of 42 episodes, and the podcast novel has won both a Parsec Award and a Geekie Award.

Not only was William’s character artwork featured on Character Design Served, but the trailer, made with work from Brian Ellis (concepting artist from Hasbro and Lego), was featured on Motion Graphics Served later in 2014.

It’s certainly worth a look (and a listen)!  Click the images above to see the corresponding projects and be sure to follow William here.

Behind the Project: Moving Time

In this series, we’ll look deeper into some of the projects on Behance.net that are especially admired in our community. Gem Fletcher collaborated with Photographer Mads Perch to create the beautiful series Moving Time. Gem Fletcher is an Art Director who works with photographers around the world, creating award-winning photography, marrying highly conceptual art direction with the unique visual style of her collaborators. We were lucky enough to gain more insight into their project from Gem!

What was your inspiration for this project?
I’m really interested in the idea of destabilization. This takes different forms, sometimes it can be about creating an illusion, leaving the viewer questioning the construction of an image and sometimes it’s about exploring the tension between reality and fantasy.

With this project we wanted to play with using projection as a material, a method of transformation within the framework of a traditional portrait.

The project was something Mads and I had discussed for several months and although we had some specific technical and aesthetic ideas, we also wanted to leave room for play and exploration. Read more →

December ProSite of the Month

Each month, our curators select one ProSite to feature as “ProSite of the Month”. Our December selection goes to London-based Andy Hau, who runs a studio specializing in architecture, product design, and graphic design. Inspired by everything from the Eames Brothers to the largest of buildings to the smallest of logos, they describe their design solutions as “slightly left-of-center.” If their work is anything like their website design – we’re hooked.
